We have always been a fan of the actor Jim Carrey. Reading biographies are inspiring and his story is one that all of us in It Works! can relate to. We think his experiences with confidence, faith, hope, belief, practice, chasing a dream, taking a risk and never giving up is one that we all can learn from.
Early in his life, Jim’s family’s circumstances took a turn for the worst and he found himself working as a janitor in a factory with his father to make ends meet. His family actually had to live out of a Volkswagen camper for a time.
Jim loved to perform for anyone who would watch, and as a child, he used to wear his tap shoes to bed just in case his parents needed cheering up in the middle of the night. At age 10, he mailed his résumé to “The Carol Burnett Show.”
He dropped out of high school and it may have seemed likely he would follow his parents into poverty. But Jim believed in his future, continually practicing his celebrity impersonations and in 1979 he took a risk and moved to Los Angeles.
Jim never lost sight of his goals or hope and vision for his dreams and a better future; he kept “keeping on” even in the face of obstacles. Early in the 1990‘s, struggling as a young comic trying to make it in Los Angeles, he drove his old beat-up Toyota to a place that overlooked the city. While sitting there, broke, looking down over the city and dreaming of his future, he wrote himself a check for $10 million. He put in the memo line 'for acting services rendered' and dated it for Thanksgiving 1995. He stuck that check in his wallet - and you probably know the rest of the story.
One of Debbie’s and mine favorite movies of all time, Dumb and Dumber, was released in 1994. By 1995, Jim had seen the tremendous success of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The Mask and Liar, Liar followed, among many others. His per film fee at that point had climbed to a staggering $20 million.
Did writing that check to himself have anything to do with his future success? We think so! In order to realize your dream, you first have to imagine it. Can you see your dream? What are you doing to keep your thinking focused on the future you want?
If you haven’t, take the time now to write in your why and your dream on the new “Dream Maker” sheet. Then write your own check and date it. Your check is already signed by Mark Pentecost! All you have to do now is develop confidence, believe and take action! Complete a dream board as soon as possible and display it where you can see it often
It Works! is an awesome personal development program with an incredible compensation plan. Just decide what you want your future to be and then “swing for the fences” while you are creating it. You will help many others along the way and IT will change your life!
