IWG Book Club

Welcome to the first session of the It Works Global Book Club! We are currently reading, “Beach Money” by Jordan Adler. This week we are discussing Chapter 1, “Beach Money”. (I have to admit, I have been reading ahead. It’s such a great book and easy to read!)

It Works Distributors Dave and Debbie Sasek- earning that "Beach Money"

There was one passage, and one sentence in particular, that really jumped out and grabbed me as I was reading Chapter One:

“Let’s say you like the idea of Beach Money, but you are not sure if it’s for you, because you don’t know if you are capable of achieving it. In other words, you really love the idea of getting paid whether you go to work or not, but you don’t believe that it’s possible for someone of your background. You obviously won’t pursue opportunities that pay you Beach Money, and therefore you will never have it. You will probably be one of the many who spend their entire life working hard at a job or traditional business. And you will spend most of your life ‘just getting by.’ If you’re lucky, you will be fine.”

The last sentence stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought about all the people I knew, and how many of them are getting by “just fine”. Not great, but not necessarily bad. Fine. Almost everyone I know is getting by “just fine”. I thought about this more. At the end of my life, would I be happy looking back on a life that was “just fine”?

This made me think of a great quote I heard from John F. Kennedy. He said, “There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long range risks of comfortable inaction.” Those people who are “just getting by” are living a life of comfortable inaction. Our It Works Independent Distributors will never experience this life- because they refuse to settle for anything less than spectacular.

And why should you? This is your life, and you only get one. As Adler goes on to say, “Beach Money sets you free.” Freedom to spend your time and your life how you want, with who you want, when you want! Now, is that so much to ask?

What are your thoughts on this chapter? What passages or sentences stood out to you? Let’s discuss!

PS- These chapters are very short! For next week, lets read chapters 2-5 :)

I liked the line that says "Let's say you like the idea of Beach Money, but you are not sure if it's for you, because you don't know if you are capable of achieving it." I am a hard worker and I have been drawing a pay check since I was 12 so I knew I was "capable" and that I would work hard for others even more than for myself.(which in this business is hand in hand) I was raised with a strong work ethic and I alwasy thought I would be considered lazy if I wasn't working hard ALL the time. So for me this book has taught me it is OK to have "Beach Money" and enjoy life and that you don't have to hide the fact that you are enjoying doing other things right along with building your business. Talk about getting rid of a quilt trip I put on myself for the biggest part of my life. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Hi Pat! That's a GREAT point. In this business you have to work just as hard for others as you would for yourself. And NEVER forget that it's okay to enjoy the journey :) Thanks for the feedback- I LOVE this book too!
